SMS Instant Messaging Saves Lives
If you think that the SMS instant messaging
services on your wireless communication device is nothing more than a convenient
way to stay in touch with friends and family, you'd better think again.
There's a whole lot more passing through the instant messaging wireless gateway
than "Meet you at the club at 9 PM" messages and some of those text messages are
saving lives according to SMS technology software developer
SMS4pro.com, a company
that makes SMS-enabled software tools that lets nearly any software application
send and receive text messages.
The company points to a recent story from CBC News, an Australian news provider,
about three men who were lost at sea in their small boat for nearly three weeks
after being blown off course by a sudden fierce storm.
The three men survived the ordeal by sharing one squid that they had managed to
catch and by drinking rainwater that they collected in a bucket until they
drifted into an area where they found that cellular service was available.
Although they were too far away from the cellular tower to get dial tone, they
were amazed to discover that they were able to use instant messaging to send a
text message to family members who arranged for their rescue.
There are plenty of other stories that have a happy ending thanks to instant
messaging technology and to companies like SMS4Pros that provide the software
needed to make it all run.
A 17 year old boy in the United States managed to use instant messaging to send
a text message to his family telling them that he had been kidnapped. He was
rescued, and the kidnapper caught, thanks to police who were able to home in on
his instant messaging transmissions using cellular location technology.
And with kidnapping incidents becoming all too familiar around the world, many
police departments and child protection agencies are setting up SMS alert
systems where subscribers can join for free and use instant messaging to receive
notifications whenever a missing child alert is issued.
One of the most visible users of this instant messaging technology is the U.S.
based Amber Alert Network. The Dutch police recently implemented a similar text
messaging system that sends bulk SMS messages whenever a child goes missing.
And in the U.K., police in the town of Bury St. Edmonds saw first-hand how
valuable instant messaging can be as a crime fighting tool. The police
department had recently implemented a Crime Alert system where residents could
subscribe and receive instant messaging alerts whenever the police wanted to
inform them of criminal activity. Their very first use of instant messaging
scored a goal when citizens sent text messages back to police reporting the
location of a man wanted for a series of church burglaries.
While being in business is all about profit, it's nice to know that companies
like SMS4pros are involved in making the world a better and safer place by
inventing technology that takes instant messaging to a whole new level.
