E-Commerce Companies Embrace Wireless Communication Technology
Internet-based e-commerce was just the
beginning. Now that the majority of Internet users have accepted on-line
shopping as a viable alternative to mail order or hitting the mall, cutting-edge
e-retailers and service providers like PayPal and auction giant eBay are taking
e-commerce to the next level with wireless communication technology.
Retailers are saving thousands of dollars every month by shifting their customer
service and product shipment notifications from expensive human-based telephone
call technology to wireless communication notifications via a SMS gateway. Now
that SMS toolkits, like those offered by technology provider
SMS4pro.com, are
plentiful, it's a simple matter to SMS-enable any legacy software so that it can
automatically send a text message directly to the customer's wireless
communication device.
These wireless communication tool kits hide all of the complexity of accessing
the SMS gateway, and there are even add-on products that plug right into
applications like MS Outlook so sending an SMS message is as easy as sending an
e-mail.
Even on-line auction house eBay has jumped on the wireless communication
bandwagon by offering their users the ability to receive outbid and auction won
or lost notifications via ordinary text messaging. Since eBay's customer auction
notification system already knew how to send those messages via e-mail, adding
the wireless communication layer was a simple task that made sense.
But there's more to SMS-based e-commerce than simply delivering instant
messages. On-line payment service provider PayPal, a division of eBay, now
offers their customers the ability to send payments to any other PayPal user via
wireless communication.
The process is quick and easy for both the payment sender and receiver. It works
like this:
The sender prepares a SMS message containing the amount of money that they want
to send and the payment recipient's cell phone number.
The text message is sent to 729725, PayPal's SMS number, which spells PAYPAL on
the cellular keyboard.
The sender receives a computer-generated call to his or her cell phone where
they are prompted to enter their PIN.
Upon successful entry of the PIN, the funds are transferred to the recipient's
PayPal account. Once the transaction is completed, PayPal sends a wireless
communication SMS message to the recipient notifying him or her of the
transaction. Total turn-around time is mere seconds.
Television and Radio direct marketing companies are also lining up behind SMS
technology providers like SMS4Pro to tap into services that enable customers to
hear or see commercials for products and services and place orders by sending a
text message to a special number. The billing for the order is handled by
special software that places the charge onto the buyer's cell phone bill in much
the same way as 900 telephone numbers charge the buyer's land line for
purchases.
As wireless communication continues to make inroads into the traditional
e-commerce platforms, the need to have an Internet-connected computer to perform
e-commerce is going to be greatly reduced.
